We have a doctor's appointment tomorrow afternoon, so hopefully we will learn more then. Until then...

In the meantime, we have been celebrating his expectant arrival with baby showers! My cousin Leah, cousin Kristin, aunt Karen and Zac's aunt Sharon and cousin-in-law Carey hosted a shower for Baby Herness on July 16th at our lake home. Our little guy got tons of fun gifts and I can't wait for him to use all of them! Then on July 30th, two of my sorority sisters, Missy and Brenda, hosted a baby shower for our little guy. More gifts were received and we got tons of neat gifts and advice from all the new moms that were there. We had another doctors visit on Wednesday, August 2, and there wasn't much change. I'm hoping for some signs of his arrival at our next visit. We'll keep you posted! Until then, enjoy the photos below. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ June 23, 2006 – About 8 Weeks To Go!
We
only have about 8 more weeks to go! Baby Herness is still estimated to
arrive sometime around August 14th. He is being very active in Mommy’s
tummy with lots of kicking, hiccups and sometimes it feels like a few
somersaults.
I
am experiencing some of the pains of pregnancy, from swelling feet to
heartburn, but overall it is not bad. These minor pains are well worth
it and the pains quickly go away when I feel this little guy move around
inside me. It seems that my weight gain and belly size have really
tapered down a bit, but I know I will continue to grow as this guy
continues to grow.
The
nursery is pretty much set up and ready for Baby Herness, with only a
few things here and there that we still need to get. I’m planning on
adding some photos and maybe his name to the walls, but of course that
can’t be done until we meet this little guy and give him a name! We do
have a couple names picked out, but we haven’t chosen one yet. We plan
on waiting to meet him before giving him a name.

We had our sixth
prenatal visit on Thursday, May 25. Our little guy decided to cooperate
during the ultrasound and they were able to get a good look at his face
and his lips look great. There were no worries, but they like to be 100%
sure there was no cleft lip. Our little guy is not so little anymore. He
was weighing in at approximately 3 pounds at the appointment and he is
measuring about a week ahead of schedule. I have now entered into the
third trimester, so our prenatal appointments will be every two weeks up
until week 36. Stay tuned…

The doctors wanted to do some follow-up photos of Baby Herness of his kidneys and lips. They aren't concerned, they just couldn't get the perfect photos last time since he was moving around so much. This time, Susie got a good photo of his kidneys and a pretty good picture of his lips, but only his right side of the lips. Everything looks good, but they do want a photo of the other side of his lips if he will cooperate. We will try again next month. He was moving around right at the beginning of the ultrasound, but decided to take a nap, face-down while Susie was trying to get a photo of his face. He's being a little stinker already, but we love him anyway! His heart rate was great at 142 bpm and he is weighing in at 1 pound and 3 ounces. I also had a glucose screen that tests for gestational diabetes that I passed with flying colors.

Since we found out little Baby Herness is a boy, we decided to stay with the nautical theme in the room. It just so happens that Babies-R-Us had a crib bedding set the coordinated with the quilt we already had in the room.

The nurse practitioner was able to determine the sex of the baby right away. Needless to say our baby boy is not shy! From the time we started the ultrasound to the time we were wrapping up, our baby boy had completely flipped around. He was moving all throughout the ultrasound, but thankfully the nurse was able to get several good photos of his stomach, all four chambers of his heart, his spine, his lips, his kidneys, the umbilical cord and much more. His heartbeat was around 144-146 bpm at the visit and he is weighing in a 13 ounces.

Thanks to my Mom, Grandma, and Aunts I have a variety of maternity clothes that should get me to summer. We went out shopping on Saturday, March 11th and I camped out in the dressing room as they all brought me outfits to try on. I tried on so many things that I had a hard time narrowing them down on what to buy. I also started feeling the baby move. I thought I was feeling the baby move a couple weeks ago, but I wasn't quite sure. Now I'm pretty positive. Man this baby is a mover and shaker! I think Baby H does somersaults all day long!
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ March 1, 2006 -- Baby on the Move Our third prenatal visit. We got an extra surprise by getting another ultrasound. Deb Brown, the nurse practitioner was having a hard time finding the baby with the Doppler machine, so we hopped across the hall to get an ultrasound. She found the baby right away and realized why she was having a hard time finding the baby's heartbeat with the Doppler - the baby was busy moving around! The baby's heartbeat was around 146-147 bpm and was 16 1/2 weeks along. I also had the Quad Screen (or Triple Test) done at this appointment. The tests screen for things like Down Syndrome and Spina Bifida. All the tests came back negative which was great news!

We got to hear the baby's heartbeat for the very first time! The baby's heartbeat was somewhere around the 160s bpm. The baby was 12 1/2 weeks along at this visit.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ January 2006 -- Herness Headlines - "Baby To Arrive In August" We started telling family of our exciting news of a little one on the way. Then we started mentioning to friends. We officially announced the news to family and friends with this email.
Baby Herness to Arrive in August HH January 21, 2006
Baby Herness is expected to arrive sometime around August 14, 2006. Both Zac and Cari are very excited parents-to-be. Cari, mom-to-be, and baby are doing just fine. Cari is just about to complete her 11th week and can’t wait to enter the second trimester in a couple of weeks. The photo attached is an ultrasound photo taken at their first doctor visit on January 5, 2006. The baby was just about 8½ weeks along and Zac and Cari even got to see the tiny heart beating! Zac and Cari can’t wait to find out the sex of the baby sometime around the end of March.
In the meantime, Zac and Cari have set up an online baby pool at www.ExpectNet.com. It is a free baby pool game in which you can submit your best guess on the sex of the baby, birthday, birth weight and birth length. The game name is: BabyHerness (Please note that the game name is case sensitive and includes no spaces). Please visit the site and enter your best guess. Good luck!
Baby Herness will be the first grandchild for both Cari’s parents and Zac’s parents. So the jury is still out on who is excited more – the parents-to-be or the grandparents-to-be!

I think this is when it finally really hit us that we were having a baby. It was just amazing to see the little baby growing inside of me and to see the tiny heart beating! It is a moment that is just so awesome it is hard to describe. The baby was 8 1/2 weeks along and was about the size of a peanut.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Christmas 2005 -- You're Going to Be Grandparents! We decided that we couldn't wait to tell our parents that they were going to be grandparents. So we decided that Christmas would be a perfect time to share the news. I had bought frames back in October when we decided that it was time to start a family just so that I would have them on hand when the time came to give them to our parents. Little did I know at the time that they would turn out to be perfect Christmas gifts! We wanted it to be a bit of a surprise so we made the frame be the last gift that each of our parents opened on Christmas. The frames are the same - silver and they read "A family just isn't complete without Grandparents" and a note in place of a photo that read "Estimated Arrival - Mid-August 2006".

I had commented to Zac a few days prior that I was exhausted and tired lately and he thought maybe I was pregnant. I didn't think so until Tuesday when I had to stop in mid-sentence to take a breath. That night I went up to Target and got a home pregnancy test. Sure enough - we were pregnant!
